| AI's Impact on Jobs: Artificial intelligence to replace high earners at their job |
A recent study published in Science suggests that artificial intelligence is likely to impact higher earners such as software engineers and data scientists. Despite previous studies addressing fears of AI replacing human workers, this research indicates that skilled workers might face job displacement.
The study analyzed over 900 occupations, finding that 20% of employees could have more than half of their tasks influenced by AI advancements. This prediction highlights the uncertainty of AI’s impact on the job market.
Conducted by two OpenAI researchers, along with representatives from Britain’s Centre for the Governance of AI and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the study utilized generative AI for its assessment, specifically the GPT-4 LLM.
According to the findings, 18.5% of workers are in roles where over 50% of tasks could be automated by AI, and 80% of workers might experience at least a 10% disruption. Jobs such as blockchain engineers, clinical data managers, public relations specialists, and financial quantitative analysts are among those most affected. In contrast, manual labor jobs like motorcycle mechanics, athletes, tire repairers, and stonemasons are less likely to be impacted.
Only 34 of the 923 jobs studied were predicted to remain unaffected by AI. The study underscores the need for further research to support workers in adapting to potential job displacement due to AI advancements.
