Apple plans to enhance its Siri voice assistant and operating systems by integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT, aiming to catch up in the AI race. The announcement was made at Apple's annual developers conference on Monday, where several new features were unveiled.
This integration is part of a new personalized AI system called "Apple Intelligence," designed to simplify navigation on Apple devices. Updates to the iPhone and Mac operating systems will allow access to ChatGPT through a partnership with OpenAI. ChatGPT will also boost other tools, including text and content generation, with a test version available in the autumn.
Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that this move would elevate the company's products, as he opened the Worldwide Developers Conference at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.
Apple has faced pressure to introduce new AI features after rivals rapidly adopted the technology. The company was recently overtaken by Microsoft and Nvidia as the world's most valuable company. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that while the new AI system may reassure investors, integrating ChatGPT might expose Apple's limitations, as ChatGPT steps in where Siri falls short.
Apple has been largely absent in the recent surge of AI products from tech firms. Cook assured investors in 2023 that Apple would approach AI cautiously, and these plans were finally detailed on Monday.
"Apple Intelligence" will integrate into all Apple products and apps, providing features like a writing assistant and navigation suggestions, similar to Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot, but without extra cost. Siri will be refreshed with a new interface and a more conversational approach.
Apple emphasized the security of "Apple Intelligence," noting that some processing will be done on the device while larger tasks will be handled in the cloud, with no data stored there, maintaining privacy.
Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi highlighted that this system brings powerful generative models to iPhones, iPads, and Macs, using personal context to offer relevant intelligence while protecting privacy.
The integration of ChatGPT marks a notable shift for Apple, which traditionally guards its products closely. This decision comes as Google and Microsoft face scrutiny over errors in their AI products. Apple's resistance to outside apps and browsers has only changed due to EU legislation, indicating the power of OpenAI's technology.
Apple also announced that its mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, will be available in the UK on July 12, following its US release in February.
