One of the new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18 is Genmoji, which enables iPhone users to create unique emoji-like characters using AI based on text input. These Genmoji will resemble traditional emoji but will be custom-generated, as detailed in an iOS 18 WWDC session.
Unlike emoji, which are pictographs encoded in the Unicode Standard and rendered by each platform, Genmoji are created using Apple's new NSAdaptiveImageGlyph API. This API also supports other images like stickers and Memoji, making them function similarly to emoji. Genmoji are generated in a standard square image format with multiple resolutions and enhanced metadata, allowing them to integrate seamlessly with text, just like regular emoji.
Genmoji can be used independently, copied, pasted, and sent as stickers. They can be inserted inline with text, maintaining line height and text formatting, and are supported in any context that allows for rich text.

However, Genmoji are not part of the Unicode Standard and may not be suitable for use with data such as identifiers, phone numbers, or email addresses. They will also not be as widely supported as traditional emoji. In earlier versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, as well as apps that do not support rich text, Genmoji will appear as text descriptions.
Currently, Genmoji and other Apple Intelligence features are not included in the iOS 18 developer beta, but Apple plans to start allowing developers to test these features this summer. Genmoji and Apple Intelligence will be publicly available this fall, limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and iPads and Macs with M-series chips.
