China to Lead Global Auto Industry Standards for New Energy and Intelligent Vehicles in 2024

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced plans to develop new global standards for the auto industry, focusing on new energy vehicles (NEVs) and intelligent connected vehicles. A key document outlines China's intention to lead the creation of nearly 20 international standards, including those for fuel cell vehicles and automotive radar. China also aims to develop at least three new standards for EV performance testing and collision safety, and to establish new international standards working groups.

China will continue its leadership in nine existing working groups, such as those for auto perception sensors and autonomous driving test scenarios. The country plans to expedite the development of regulations for autonomous driving systems, EV power measurement methods, and power battery durability.

The ministry highlighted the historical importance of standardization in the auto industry and emphasized China's proactive strategy in this area. China has previously proposed international standards for autonomous driving test scenarios and led the development of ISO 34501, the first international standard in this field.

In 2022, China set up an automotive standardization research institute to coordinate international standards efforts. China's NEV production and sales have ranked first globally for nine consecutive years, and its technological innovation continues to expand.

The ministry plans to enhance the consistency between national and international standards and increase the production of foreign-language versions of national standards. Forward-looking research will focus on areas like solid-state batteries, EV battery-swapping, and auto-related artificial intelligence. China will also expand international partnerships to support these efforts.
