China Urges U.S. to Honor Commitments and Respect Sovereignty in Call for Improved Relations

China has urged the United States to honor President Biden's "five-noes" commitment, respect China's sovereignty, security, and development interests, and contribute positively to the steady development of China-U.S. relations, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. This statement was made during a daily press briefing on Friday, addressing the phone conversation between Chinese Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell on June 27.

During the conversation, Ma and Campbell had a candid and in-depth exchange on China-U.S. relations and mutual concerns. Ma emphasized China's firm positions on several key issues:

1. Taiwan: Ma stressed that Taiwan is central to China's core interests and the foremost red line in China-U.S. relations. He asserted that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end and that the U.S. should recognize the harmful nature of Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to cross-Strait peace and stability. He called on the U.S. to adhere to the three China-U.S. joint communiques, cease arming Taiwan, and fulfill its commitment to not supporting "Taiwan independence."
2. Xizang (Tibet): Ma highlighted that issues related to Xizang are about China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He urged the U.S. to stop supporting "Tibetan independence" forces and to cease interfering in China's internal affairs using Xizang-related issues as a pretext.
3. South China Sea: Addressing the tension around Ren'ai Jiao, Ma attributed it to the Philippines' actions, which challenge China's sovereignty by attempting to permanently occupy the area. He called on the U.S. to stop supporting Philippine provocations and to help maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.
4. Ukraine: Ma reiterated that China's stance on Ukraine is fair and just, and urged the U.S. to stop blaming China for the conflict and to cease hindering normal economic and trade exchanges between China and Russia.

Ma also criticized the U.S. for its misuse of unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction, asserting that China will firmly protect its entities and individuals' legitimate rights and interests.
