CoreWeave Expands AI Computing Capacity with Core Scientific Partnership to Meet Growing Demand

CoreWeave, an AI hyper-scaler partnered with GPU giant Nvidia, has expanded its existing contract to rent high-performance computing capacity from Core Scientific, one of the largest cryptocurrency mining operators in North America. Initially a cryptocurrency mining outfit, CoreWeave shifted focus years ago to visual effects rendering, inference service, and pixel streaming. The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT spurred significant demand for AI computing, which CoreWeave capitalized on.

The company now offers services including cloud-based AI training, fine-tuning, and model operations, leveraging more than 45,000 high-end Nvidia GPUs through Kubernetes-native infrastructures. This shift has driven cryptocurrency miners like Core Scientific to repurpose their data centers to meet the growing need for AI computing power.

Under the original contract, Core Scientific was to provide 200MW of high-performance computing (HPC) hosting to CoreWeave for 12 years, with options to expand. Recently, CoreWeave exercised this option, prompting Core Scientific to modify a total of 100MW of its infrastructure, adding approximately 70MW more capacity for CoreWeave's Nvidia GPUs in HPC operations. Core Scientific CEO Adam Sullivan noted that many data centers built in the last 20 years are not equipped to support future computing requirements.

Core Scientific’s application-specific data centers (ASDCs) support the higher rack energy densities needed by HPC operations like those of CoreWeave. Its data center in Austin, Texas, boasts 1.2GW of contracted power available for operations. By the second half of 2025, CoreWeave is expected to lease around 270MW of this capacity, with the option to expand by an additional 230MW at other Core Scientific sites.

CoreWeave is also expanding in Europe, with plans for data centers in Norway, Spain, and Sweden by the end of 2025. The company already operates two data centers in the U.K. and has established a European headquarters.

In addition to its AI computing services, CoreWeave has collaborated with Bit192 to bring GPT-NeoX-20B to Japan. As the demand for compute-intensive capabilities grows, CoreWeave continues to adapt and expand its infrastructure to meet the needs of various industries.
