DJI Osmo Mobile 6 and SE Gimbals Now Controllable via Apple Watch with New Firmware Update

DJI, renowned for its drones and other gadgets, is launching a new firmware update for its Osmo Mobile 6 and Osmo Mobile SE gimbals, enabling users to control them via an Apple Watch.

According to the release notes, the smartwatch will be able to access several functions, including viewing the camera feed, changing the gimbal direction, adjusting the composition, and switching between portrait and landscape modes. After shooting, “the captured photo or the first frame of the video” will be displayed on the watch face.

To use this feature, users need an iPhone and one of six supported Apple Watch models, such as the Series 9. The complete list of compatible devices is available on DJI’s FAQ page. While there are no restrictions on iPhone models, they must run iOS 16 or later. Similarly, the Apple Watches must have watchOS 9 or later installed.

If the required hardware is available, users should update the DJI Mimo app to version 2.0.4. Once the firmware is installed, they need to connect their Apple Watch to their iPhone and open the Mimo app on both devices.

Remote Operation

The FAQ provides some tips and considerations for using the remote control feature. Due to the Apple Watch's limited “video transmission bandwidth,” the video feed on the watch face may appear lower quality than the recording from the attached camera. This quality can vary between models, but DJI assures that the final video resolution will remain unaffected.

It is possible to operate the gimbals from a distance. DJI recommends using them in an open area without obstacles and keeping the devices within eight meters (approximately 26 feet) of each other. DJI also advises against using other Bluetooth devices or the DJI Mic 2 alongside an Apple Watch, as Bluetooth connections on Apple hardware may experience interruptions.

If using something like the Mic 2, DJI suggests connecting it to the setup “via the included mobile phone adapter.”

The update includes more than just the remote control function. DJI is also optimizing two other features. ActiveTrack will perform better, offering more stable subject tracking and a smoother shooting experience. The AI Editor for Parents & Kids Mode is also upgraded, allowing recordings to be automatically edited and generated in the Mimo app.

Users should look out for the patch as it rolls out. If the update fails, DJI recommends restarting the gimbal, relaunching the app, and reestablishing the smartphone’s Bluetooth connection before attempting to install the patch again.
