Frontier Communications Data Breach Exposes Personal Information of Over 750,000 Customers

Frontier Communications has disclosed that a data breach resulting from a cyber attack on April 14th exposed the personal information of over 750,000 customers, including full names and Social Security numbers. Hackers claim to have more data and are threatening to release it unless Frontier pays a ransom.

According to a notice submitted to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, hackers accessed the personal data of 751,895 customers. Frontier has notified affected customers and provided one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft services. The company asserts that it does not believe customer financial information was compromised.

The RansomHub extortion group claimed responsibility for the attack on June 4th, threatening to leak 5GB of stolen customer data unless Frontier meets their demands by June 14th. The group alleges the data includes information for two million customers, such as full names, physical addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, email addresses, credit scores, and phone numbers.

In response, Frontier has strengthened its network security and notified regulatory authorities and law enforcement. A securities filing indicates the company had to shut down some systems to contain the breach.
