Google Enhances NotebookLM with Gemini 1.5 Pro: New Features and Expanded Support

Google NOTEBOOKLM upgraded 

Google's NotebookLM writing assistant has been upgraded to run on the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, which also powers the Gemini Advanced chatbot. This enhancement improves the assistant's contextual awareness, enabling it to answer questions about images, charts, and diagrams in source materials.

While it's integrated with Gemini 1.5 Pro, it's unclear if the AI will now accept longer text prompts or generate more detailed responses, despite Google’s AI handling context windows of up to a million tokens. We've inquired with Google about potential support for larger prompts.

Prompts will mainly remain the same but will now feature inline citations marked with encircled numbers. Clicking these citations will link directly to supporting passages in source documents for easier verification. This is particularly important due to ongoing issues with AI hallucinations. For images, citations will display the source picture in a small window next to the text.

Enhance Information Sourcing

NotebookLM’s support for information sources now includes Google Slides and web URLs, in addition to PDFs, text files, and Google Docs. A new feature called Notebook Guide allows users to format their data into structures like FAQs or study guides, which can be very useful.

Additional changes include the ability to use up to 50 different sources per project, with each source being up to 500,000 words long, a significant increase from the previous limit of five sources. Raiza Martin, a senior product manager at Google Labs, stated that NotebookLM is a closed system, meaning the AI won’t conduct web searches beyond the user-provided prompts, and all responses are based solely on the given information.

The latest update for NotebookLM is now available in over 200 countries and territories. You can explore the new features on the AI’s official website, but remember, NotebookLM is still experimental and may have some issues. For example, TheVerge noted the URL source function didn’t work during their demo, although it worked fine in other tests.
