Google is introducing a new Gemini AI side panel in Gmail designed to assist users in writing emails and summarizing email threads. Additionally, the Gemini side panel is being added to Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This rollout follows Google's announcement at its recent I/O developer conference, which highlighted numerous new AI features.
The Gemini integration in Gmail allows users to draft emails, receive suggested responses, and ask questions to find specific information from emails or Google Drive files. While Gemini provides prompts to help users get started, they can also ask custom questions such as “What was the PO number for my agency?” or “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?”

In Docs, the Gemini side panel assists with writing, refining content, summarizing information, and brainstorming ideas. It can also create content based on other files. In Slides, Gemini can generate new slides, custom images, and summarize presentations. For Sheets, the panel helps track and organize data, create tables, generate formulas, and perform various tasks. In Drive, Gemini can summarize documents and provide quick facts about projects.

These features are available only to Google Workspace customers with specific add-ons: Gemini Business or Enterprise, Gemini Education or Education Premium, or a Google One AI Premium subscription.

Google's move to integrate generative AI into its applications follows similar steps by other tech giants. Earlier this year, Meta introduced its AI chatbot to Instagram and WhatsApp, while Apple announced the addition of generative AI features to apps like Siri, Messages, Mail, and Notes. Despite the growing trend of incorporating AI into everyday products, this development has received mixed reactions. While some users are excited about the new AI features, others have expressed reluctance, as seen with Meta’s AI chatbot in Instagram search. As major tech companies continue to embed AI into their services, it is becoming increasingly difficult for users to avoid generative AI tools.
