Google Makes User Reviews Public and Searchable: Privacy Concerns Arise

Google has announced that reviews of movies, TV shows, books, albums, and games will now be visible under one searchable profile page starting June 24.

This change, initiated via email notifications last month, means user profiles containing these reviews are public and can be found through Google searches. The ability to post reviews started in India in 2017 and has since expanded globally.

Although Google provides an option to make profiles private, this feature was only recently made available. The public default setting has raised concerns about privacy and the potential for profiling by employers and advertisers. Despite efforts to notify users, many might be unaware of these new public profiles.
