| iOS 18 Introduces new security features for locking individual apps |
iOS 18 will introduce a new security feature allowing users to lock individual apps, according to multiple sources. This feature will enable users to secure built-in iPhone apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, Phone, Photos, Safari, Settings, and more, enhancing privacy and security. To unlock an app, users will need to authenticate via Face ID, and the feature is expected to work with Touch ID or an iPhone's passcode as well.
It is not yet confirmed whether this feature will be compatible with third-party apps from the App Store.
Currently, Apple permits certain content, such as notes in the Notes app and photos in the "Recently Deleted" and "Hidden" albums in the Photos app, to be locked behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The new iOS 18 feature will extend this capability by allowing entire apps to be locked, even when the iPhone itself is unlocked.
While iPhone users have been using Screen Time or Shortcuts to lock apps, these workarounds will become unnecessary with iOS 18.
Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on Monday. The first beta version of iOS 18 will likely be available to Apple Developer Program members immediately after the keynote, with the general release expected in September.
