Meta has launched its Llama-3-powered AI chatbot, Meta AI, for all users in India after a testing phase during the general elections. Initially tested in April on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook, Meta AI is now widely accessible in India through these platforms and the meta.ai website. However, it currently only supports English.
Meta AI, similar to other chatbots like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude, can suggest recipes, plan workouts, help write emails, and summarize texts. On Instagram, it can recommend Reels based on user queries, and on Facebook, it provides prompts to ask questions related to posts. It also generates images, though previous versions had biases like adding turbans to images of Indian men.

Meta emphasized ongoing updates and improvements to its models. The chatbot is now available to India's vast user base of 500 million WhatsApp users and millions of users on other Meta apps. On WhatsApp, Meta AI can assist both in individual chats and group chats, although it only has context based on the specific text mentioned or replied to.
Meta AI functionality cannot be turned off or hidden, but users can choose not to engage with it. This rollout follows Google's launch of its Gemini app in India, which supports nine local languages.
