The new initiative allows users to select their preferred AI service from initial offerings like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral, with plans to add more AI services. Mozilla aims to refine this feature before rolling it out to the beta and release versions of Firefox.
After choosing an AI service, users can utilize the chatbot to summarize webpage information, simplify language, or test their knowledge. The offering is entirely optional, allowing users to decide whether they want to use an AI service.
Firefox senior vice president Ian Carmichael highlighted the importance of providing choice in AI services, stating, “You should be able to choose the service that works best for you, and not be locked into a single provider. Offering options gives people an opportunity to experiment with many services to find the one that’s most helpful in solving the problem they have.”
This move comes as companies like Google and Microsoft, along with browser startups such as Opera and DuckDuckGo, have integrated AI chatbots into their browsers to help users with tasks like summarizing web pages and answering questions.
