Nepal imported a record 11,466 electric four-wheelers in the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, which ends in mid-July, as announced by the Department of Customs on Friday. This marks the first time the country has imported over 10,000 electric vehicles in a single year. In comparison, Nepal imported 4,050 electric cars in the 2022-23 fiscal year and 1,805 in 2021-22.

Kailash Babu Gelal, managing director of G. Motors Pvt. Ltd., noted the growing popularity of electric vehicles in Nepal, attributing it to their affordability, driven by lower taxes and operating costs compared to fuel-powered vehicles.

China was the largest supplier, shipping 7,931 electric vehicles to Nepal in the first 11 months of 2023-24. Gelal praised Chinese electric vehicles for their superior battery and motor quality, stating they are among the best in the world.
