OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has informed some shareholders that the company is contemplating altering its governance structure to become a for-profit entity that wouldn't be under the control of the nonprofit board, according to a report by The Information. One possible option being considered is a for-profit benefit corporation, similar to what competitors like Anthropic and xAI have adopted, the report mentioned, citing an individual familiar with the discussions.
