Opera announced today the release of Opera One’s second version in developer beta, featuring new multimedia controls, split tabs, and advanced AI capabilities. The update also introduces new themes and design elements for a refreshed look.
Traditionally, Opera has placed multimedia controls on the sidebar. However, the new version moves these controls to a floating window, similar to the picture-in-picture video module. These resizable floating controls will match the browser's set theme and include options like play/pause, next, previous, pop-out, and volume, depending on the size.

A significant addition to Opera One R2 is the split tab window, allowing users to work on two web pages simultaneously. This feature is similar to functionalities found in newer browsers like Arc and SigmaOS. Additionally, a new indicator in the form of an underscore will highlight recently closed tabs, with the indicator's shade varying based on the time since the tab was closed. This feature will be available to users with more than 30 tabs open.

Opera has been integrating AI features into its browser, including a sidebar with the "Aria" assistant, AI-powered summarization, and local use of large language models (LLMs). The company had previously introduced capabilities like image and voice generation and image understanding through its experimental AI features program. These features will be fully integrated into Opera One R2.
The new version also brings a page context mode, allowing users to ask Aria questions about a webpage, such as finding, translating, or summarizing specific information. Opera plans to release Opera One R2 to a wider user base later this year.
