| AI-Powered Bullet Vending Machines Gain Traction in Gun-Dense U.S. States |
Nearly half of Americans report living in a household with guns, making the U.S. the most gun-dense country in the world, surpassing even Yemen. It's the only country with more guns than people. Reflecting this, in some states, bullets can now be purchased from vending machines in grocery stores.
American Rounds, the company behind this trend, employs AI and facial recognition to ensure buyers meet legal age requirements for ammunition purchases. While it might seem similar to buying a candy bar, the process is more rigorous. Federal law mandates that buyers must be at least 18 to purchase ammunition for long guns and at least 21 for handgun bullets. American Rounds' machines verify buyers' ages using built-in AI, card scanning, and facial recognition software.
These bullet vending machines have been reported in six locations in Oklahoma and Alabama. However, a local news outlet in Alabama reported that a store in Tuscaloosa removed one of these machines after its legality was questioned at a city council meeting. The city's legal department confirmed the machines are legal if they meet zoning requirements, but the store cited a lack of sales for the removal on July 3rd.
