Amazon has discontinued the business version of its Astro security robot after less than eight months, GeekWire reported on Wednesday. Despite claiming to be "fully committed" to its home robotics division, Amazon has stopped production of the higher-end model, which was designed to secure spaces up to 5,000 square feet.
Launched in November 2023, Astro for Business was marketed as a workplace security robot priced at $2,350. It featured an HD periscope and required multiple subscriptions, including Ring Protect Pro, Astro Security, and Virtual Security Guard memberships. The decision to discontinue it after such a short period isn't entirely surprising given these complexities.
An Amazon spokesperson assured that there have been no layoffs due to this move and that resources will now focus on home robotics. The consumer version of Astro, released in 2021, remains available by invite only for $1,600. Panos Panay, who joined Amazon last year to lead the Devices & Services division, oversees consumer robotics among other areas.

The home version of Astro isn’t a complete security guard replacement but can patrol your home, alert you to unknown individuals, or respond to sounds of breaking glass and alarms. It also offers less essential features like following you with music, delivering messages, and setting timers, tasks that are easily handled by much cheaper devices.
