Scholarship Overview

The Vanier Graduate Scholarships offer $50,000 per year for three years to outstanding candidates, providing them the opportunity to conduct research at premier Canadian institutions. Named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, this program aims to attract and retain world-class students who demonstrate leadership skills and high academic achievement in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health.

  • Special Circumstances (optional, max 0.5 page).
  • Two Leadership letters of reference (max two pages each).
  • Research Proposal (max two pages for English; 2.5 pages for French).
  • Project References (max five pages).
  • Academic Transcripts.


Application Process

To apply for the Canada Vanier Graduate Scholarship, follow these steps:

  1. Research Institutions: Explore Canadian institutions through the Universities Canada website and research the specific program and potential supervisors.
  2. Check Quota: Ensure your chosen institution has a quota for the Vanier CGS program for the application year.
  3. Initiate Application: Inform the faculty of graduate studies at your selected institution about your intent to apply. Alternatively, the institution may contact you to initiate the nomination process.
  4. Prepare Application: Complete the application using the ResearchNet system and submit it to your nominating institution by their internal deadline.
  5. Institutional Nomination: The institution will perform an internal selection and forward recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by November 1, 2024 (20:00 Eastern Time).
  6. Review and Selection: The Secretariat coordinates the review process and presents recommendations to the Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee, which endorses and approves the final decisions.
  7. Notification: Nominated candidates will be notified of the results in April 2025.
