Marking the anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the world's most powerful X-ray telescope, celebrates its 25th anniversary today. In honor of this milestone, NASA has unveiled 25 stunning, never-before-seen images of iconic astronomical objects such as the Crab Nebula, Pillars of Creation, and Cassiopeia A, showcasing the breathtaking universe through Chandra's lens.

Launched in 1999 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, Chandra has been a pivotal tool in astrophysics. Positioned in an egg-shaped orbit, extending over one-third of the way to the moon, it has revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos by capturing X-ray emissions from remnants of stars, supermassive black holes, and galaxy clusters.

"Chandra has made discovery after amazing discovery over the past 25 years," said Pat Slane, director of the Chandra X-ray Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "Astronomers have used Chandra to investigate mysteries that we didn't even know about when we were building the telescope, including exoplanets and dark energy."

Chandra is one of NASA's three flagship missions in the Fleet of Great Observatories, following the retired Spitzer Space Telescope and the still-operational Hubble Space Telescope. Despite its age, Chandra's data continues to be a crucial resource for astronomers worldwide, contributing to over 700 Ph.D. theses, supporting numerous research careers, and resulting in around 10,000 peer-reviewed papers. The demand for observing time with Chandra remains high, with only 20 percent of requests typically approved.

"Chandra's imagery and data have inspired people of all ages to think about what can be found when we look up into outer space," said Ellen Stofan, Under Secretary for Science and Research at the Smithsonian Institution. "Chandra continues to provide 'X-ray eyes' to allow us to better understand our place in the universe."

The latest release includes a montage of 25,000 observations by Chandra over the past quarter-century, enhanced by contributions from the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. These images highlight the Milky Way's dust-heavy center, a young star in the Pillars of Creation, and hot gas near a growing supermassive black hole in the NGC 7469 spiral galaxy.

Despite its remarkable contributions, Chandra faces an uncertain future. NASA's budget plan for the next five years suggests prematurely ending the Chandra mission due to financial constraints, despite the observatory having a projected decade of operational life remaining. This decision, aimed at reallocating the $68 million annual budget, could lead to layoffs and leave the U.S. and possibly the world without a comparable X-ray telescope. The "Save Chandra" coalition, consisting of over 700 astronomers, continues to urge NASA to reconsider this decision.

"Chandra is a living legacy that we hope will continue to help us explore the universe for years to come," said Lisa Kewley, director of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

Chandra's ongoing mission highlights its irreplaceable role in advancing our understanding of the universe, and its potential termination raises significant concerns within the scientific community.
