Daimler Truck has officially launched the Battery Technology Center (BTC) at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim, roughly a year after its topping-out ceremony. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning over 10,000 square meters, is dedicated to the product and process development for battery electric commercial vehicles, integrating both development and production under one roof.

The BTC, formerly known as InnoLab Battery during the topping-out ceremony, aims to build extensive knowledge about batteries and their production processes. Two production areas are being established within the center: one for pilot production of battery cells to gain process knowledge, and another for manufacturing prototype battery packs for test benches and test vehicles. This setup is crucial for preparing the Mannheim site for future series production of the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, anticipated to commence in the latter half of this decade.

A significant feature of the BTC is its extensive renovation and expansion of Building 18, originally constructed in 1952. The building now includes a 3,000 square meter annex, bringing the total area to 7,500 square meters. Over 60 new machines and systems have been installed to facilitate the prototypical production of battery cells and systems, encompassing coating technologies, welding processes, assembly, and adhesive processes.

The BTC is strategically divided into two main areas. The cell area focuses on acquiring product and process knowledge regarding the manufacturing of battery cells. This area allows for experimentation with various recipes in producing battery paste, known as "slurry," which is then used to create prototype battery cells. Both pouch and prismatic cells, the two primary types of battery cells, can be produced here, with the facility designed to protect sensitive materials from dust and humidity through clean and dry room areas.

Meanwhile, the pilot line for battery pack production is where experience in assembling battery packs is gained. This involves manufacturing battery modules from cells and then producing battery packs from these modules. The insights and findings from this pilot line are expected to transition into series production at the Mannheim site within a few years.
