Elon Musk to Move SpaceX and Social Media Platform X Headquarters from California to Texas

Elon Musk is solidifying his commitment to Texas by announcing plans to move SpaceX’s headquarters from its long-time home in Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, where the company operates its massive Starship manufacturing and testing site.

Musk's decision to relocate SpaceX was influenced by a recently passed California bill prohibiting schools from enforcing policies that require disclosure of students' sexuality or gender identity without their consent. Musk described this legislation, along with others, as detrimental to both families and companies. He expressed his frustration on X, stating, “Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building.”

Additionally, Musk revealed plans to move the headquarters of his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) from San Francisco to Austin, Texas, where Tesla is already headquartered. This follows Tesla's announcement in 2021 to move its headquarters from California to Austin, although the automaker still maintains significant operations in California, including its Fremont assembly plant.

SpaceX's move is not unprecedented. In February, SpaceX officially changed its state of incorporation from Delaware to Texas, and Musk also relocated his brain implant company to Nevada. Tesla shareholders recently voted to reincorporate the company from Delaware to Texas as well.

Since 2007, SpaceX has been headquartered in the former Northrop Corporation plant in Hawthorne, a site that has expanded to over 1 million square feet. Southern California remains a significant aerospace hub, home to major companies like Boeing and numerous startups.

The full implications of these moves for SpaceX and X are still unclear. SpaceX’s Hawthorne location houses large production facilities for its Falcon rocket and Dragon spacecraft, as well as mission control. However, if the moves follow the pattern of Tesla, much of the current operations may continue as usual.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott praised Musk’s decision, highlighting it as a testament to Texas’s leadership in space exploration.
