Figma CEO Dylan Field announced that the company will temporarily disable its "Make Design" AI feature following accusations that it copied designs from Apple's Weather app. The issue was first identified by Andy Allen, founder of NotBoring Software, who discovered the tool reproduced Apple's Weather app when used.
Allen took to X (formerly Twitter) to accuse Figma of training its AI tool heavily on existing apps, a claim that Field denied. Field clarified that Make Design uses off-the-shelf large language models combined with custom systems, and was not trained on Figma content, community files, or app designs.
Make Design, introduced at Figma's Config conference, generates UI layouts from text prompts to help developers quickly explore design ideas. Despite the intended benefits, concerns arose that the tool could lead to legal issues if designs closely mimicked existing apps. Allen warned designers to thoroughly check or modify the AI-generated results to avoid potential legal trouble.
Field admitted the problem stemmed from the design systems used and took responsibility for the lack of quality assurance. He stated that Figma would disable the feature as of Tuesday and conduct a full QA pass before re-enabling it, aiming to ensure the feature's reliability and originality. Figma pointed to Field's tweets as its official statement, while Apple has not commented on the issue.
