| First Millennial Saint: Teenage Tech Whiz Carlo Acutis to be Canonized in 2025 |
A teenage computer prodigy, Carlo Acutis, who utilized the early-2000s internet to spread Catholic faith awareness, is set to become the church's first millennial saint. Acutis, who passed away from leukemia at the age of 15 in 2006, has already earned the titles "God's influencer" and the "patron saint of the internet" for his significant work in cataloging Eucharistic miracles globally. This recognition will soon become official.
Pope Francis and a group of cardinals approved Acutis for canonization at a Vatican meeting on Monday, as announced by Vatican News. It is anticipated that Acutis will be declared a saint in 2025, coinciding with the church's jubilee year.
Acutis was a devout Catholic and a self-taught programmer who created several spiritually focused websites, including a highly acclaimed database of miracles. In his lifetime, he was known for aiding homeless individuals and defending victims of bullying. Posthumously, he has been credited with two healing miracles, meeting the Catholic Church's requirement for sainthood. The approval on Monday marks the final step in a process that began in 2013 when Pope Francis initiated his beatification and canonization, designating him as "a Servant of God."
Despite his religious dedication and technical expertise, Acutis also enjoyed playing video games, with Halo, Super Mario, and Pokémon among his favorites, though he limited his gaming to one hour per week.
