Meta announced on Friday that former President Donald Trump will no longer face extra severe penalties for content rule violations on his Facebook and Instagram accounts. This decision comes as the Republican National Convention approaches next week.
Trump's accounts were previously subject to full suspension for minor infractions that would not result in the same penalty for other users. With the upcoming convention, he will now be treated like any other account holder.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, explained in a company blog post that allowing political expression is crucial, and the American people should hear from presidential nominees on equal terms. He noted that the previous restrictions on Trump's accounts were a response to exceptional circumstances and had not been used recently.
Trump's interactions with Meta's content policies have been unprecedented, with his accounts being suspended across various platforms after January 6th, 2021. Although he was allowed back on Facebook and Instagram at the beginning of 2023, he remained under strict scrutiny, with potential suspensions of up to two years for further violations.
Since June 30th, Trump has been actively posting on Facebook, sharing rally videos and critiques of President Joe Biden. Trump boasts 34 million followers on Facebook compared to Biden's 11 million, and nearly 25 million followers on Instagram compared to Biden's 17.1 million.
