Microsoft is enhancing Bing by integrating generative AI search capabilities, even though previous AI updates haven't boosted its market share. This new feature, now available to a small percentage of users, creates summaries for search queries instead of just displaying traditional results.

Similar to Google's AI Overviews, Bing's new feature offers AI-generated text blocks with detailed information on queried topics. For instance, a search for "What is a spaghetti western?" would yield a summary of the film genre, including its history and notable examples. Despite the new summaries, traditional search results will still be prominently displayed.

Microsoft highlighted the careful implementation of this technology, citing concerns about clickthrough rates and the impact on publisher visibility. Google has noted that links within AI-generated summaries receive more clicks than traditional listings, although some fear this could negatively affect publisher visibility. Microsoft claims their data shows that the new experience maintains website clicks and supports a healthy web ecosystem.

Both companies have faced challenges with their AI implementations. Google's AI Overviews produced some problematic results, leading to corrective actions. Microsoft is proceeding cautiously, seeking feedback and testing thoroughly before a wider rollout.

Despite these innovations, Bing's market share remains low. According to Statcounter, Google holds 91.05% of the market, while Bing lags at 3.74%. To gain insights, Microsoft's Copilot suggested focusing on ensuring accurate and relevant search results.

Microsoft remains optimistic that generative AI search will enhance user experience and help Bing compete more effectively in the search engine market.
