Nothing is set to unveil the first smartphone from its budget CMF subbrand on July 8th, revealing the CMF Phone 1's unique customizability features through a series of teasers. The phone will include a dial that can attach accessories and a rear panel that can be easily swapped.
Although the light-up glyphs from the Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 won't be present, a short video shows a rotating dial on the back, similar to the aluminum alloy dial on the CMF Buds that allows a lanyard to be attached to the earbuds’ charging case. This dial is expected to accommodate accessories and can be unscrewed and replaced with optional attachments like a lanyard mount and a folding kickstand.
The teasers hint that the dial might offer additional functionality, reminiscent of the smart dial on the CMF Neckband Pro headphones, used for controlling volume, playback, and active noise cancellation. Previous images from the CMF account revealed easily accessible screws and a tiny screwdriver, suggesting an easily removable rear panel, now confirmed in colorways of black, blue, light green, and orange.

It is unclear if other companies will produce alternate rear panels, but it seems possible that these panels could add features like a larger battery or a wallet for holding credit and ID cards, similar to past modular phone designs like the Motorola "Moto Mods."
Nothing has yet to confirm if the removable rear panel will provide easier access to the phone’s internals, such as the battery, but it seems the focus might be more on customization rather than repairability. Alongside the CMF Phone 1, the brand will also introduce the CMF Buds Pro 2 and Watch Pro 2 at its "Community Update" event on July 8th at 5AM ET.
