OpenAI is under scrutiny for two significant security concerns: vulnerabilities in the ChatGPT Mac app and broader cybersecurity management issues. 

Engineer and Swift developer Pedro José Pereira Vieito recently discovered that the ChatGPT Mac app was storing user conversations in plain text locally, without encryption. Since the app is only available from OpenAI's website and not the App Store, it bypasses Apple's sandboxing requirements. Following the exploit's exposure by The Verge, OpenAI released an update to encrypt these locally stored chats. Sandboxing is crucial as it prevents vulnerabilities in one application from affecting others on a machine. Storing files in plain text poses a risk of sensitive data being easily accessed by other apps or malware.

The second issue dates back to 2023 when a hacker accessed OpenAI's internal messaging systems, exposing potential internal vulnerabilities. Leopold Aschenbrenner, a technical program manager at OpenAI, raised these security concerns to the board, suggesting that foreign adversaries could exploit these weaknesses. Aschenbrenner claims he was fired for whistleblowing about these security issues. OpenAI, however, stated that while they share his commitment to safe AI, they dispute many of his claims and assert that his termination was not related to his disclosures.

These incidents highlight ongoing security challenges within OpenAI. The widespread adoption of ChatGPT and the company's turbulent internal practices and reputation raise concerns about OpenAI's ability to manage data securely. While app vulnerabilities and hacker breaches are common in the tech industry, OpenAI's recent issues suggest a need for improved cybersecurity measures.
