The Port of Los Angeles is making significant strides towards zero emission operations by deploying five electric top handlers. These machines, which can grab and stack 100,000 lb. shipping containers up to six high, are part of the port's sustainability efforts.

Top handlers, resembling forklifts but with an overhead boom, load heavy shipping containers onto truck trailers and train cars, and stack them on terminals. After testing prototypes in 2020, Yusen Terminals has now integrated the first five production units into operations at the port.

“These all-electric cargo top handlers are the culmination of years of rigorous, real-world prototype testing and development here at our port,” said Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles. He praised Yusen Terminals for their leadership in adopting this technology, proving its commercial viability.

Built by Taylor Machine Works, each top handler features a massive 1 MW battery, allowing up to 18 hours of operation between charges. This supports the 650V all-electric drivetrain for back-to-back shifts. Recharging takes about five hours with a 180 kW DC fast charger.

The handlers include data loggers for tracking performance indicators, and feedback from drivers and mechanics on maneuverability, noise levels, and safety is being collected. Alan McCorkle, President and CEO of Yusen Terminals, highlighted the importance of this deployment as a major step toward zero emissions.

The Port of Los Angeles has applied for a $412 million EPA grant to support the deployment of 424 pieces of zero-emission cargo handling equipment and 250 zero-emission drayage trucks. If approved, the grant would be matched with $233 million from the port and its partners, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 41,500 tons annually.
