| Record-Breaking Foreign Visitors Flock to Japan: June Sees Unprecedented Tourism Numbers |
Japan logged 3,135,600 foreign visitors in June, the highest number ever recorded for a single month, government data shows. This figure represents a 51.2 percent increase compared to the same month in 2023 and an 8.9 percent rise from June 2019, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).
The surge in tourism has been attributed to increasing travel demand during consecutive holidays, including school vacations across the globe. The influx was particularly notable from South Korea, with 703,300 visitors, marking a 29 percent increase from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. In contrast, the number of Chinese visitors was 660,900, down 25 percent from 2019.
The cumulative number of inbound tourists for the first half of the year reached around 17.78 million, also a record high. This figure surpasses the first half of 2019 by 1 million visitors. The data indicates that Japan is on track to achieve even more impressive tourism numbers by the end of the year.
Additionally, the number of outbound Japanese travelers in June rose 32.3 percent from the previous year to 930,200, though this was still 38.8 percent lower compared to 2019. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Friday that the country could potentially welcome a record 35 million foreign visitors by the end of the year.
