Russia has laid out an ambitious roadmap for constructing its newest space station, the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS), with the first modules expected to launch within three years. On July 2, Roscosmos leadership detailed plans for this station, aiming to create an advanced platform for space research and observation.


Construction Timeline and AI Integration

The first module, a research and power node, is scheduled for a 2027 launch into a near-polar orbit. By 2030, ROSS aims to have docked its four primary modules, with two additional "special-purpose" modules expected by 2033. Cosmonauts are planned to be sent to the station in 2028, though ROSS can operate autonomously. This project is estimated to cost around $7 billion USD.

The station's construction is contingent on the success of the heavy-lift Angara A5 rocket, which has had mixed results since its introduction. Additionally, AI technology will play a role in the development and operation of ROSS. Vladimir Solovyov, chief designer of ROSS, indicated that AI would support the project, though human intelligence would remain central to its development.


Unique Features and Strategic Importance

The Russian Orbital Service Station will orbit at the same altitude as the International Space Station (ISS), about 250 miles above Earth, but in a polar, sun-synchronous orbit. This orbit allows for comprehensive observation of the Earth's surface and provides strategic views over the Northern Sea Route. The station will also have the unique capability to provide guidance for a fleet of satellites, introducing new challenges and tasks for mission control.


Historical Context and International Collaboration

Russia has been a key player in the ISS since its inception, collaborating with NASA, the European Space Agency, JAXA, and the Canadian Space Agency. However, in mid-2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, Roscosmos announced plans to leave the ISS program 'after 2024.' Despite this, Roscosmos later confirmed it would stay with the ISS until 2028. Russia is also exploring partnerships with Brazil, India, China, South Africa, and other African countries for the ROSS project.
