In a surprising move, Samsung revealed the Galaxy Ring at January’s Unpacked event, marking a significant entry into the wearable tech market. While smart rings are not entirely new, the category has been largely dominated by Oura. Samsung’s announcement underscores the potential of this nascent wearable form factor.
At Unpacked 2024, Samsung provided more details about the Galaxy Ring, its first venture into this category, beating competitors like Apple and Google to market. This health and fitness device, available for preorder at $399 starting Wednesday, complements Samsung’s existing health tech portfolio.
Samsung has explored various wearable form factors over the years, such as the IconX earbuds with built-in heart monitoring. However, the Galaxy Watch has remained a staple. The addition of the Galaxy Ring is promising for two main reasons. First, the success of Oura indicates strong consumer interest. Second, the ring enhances the functionality of devices like the Galaxy Watch rather than replacing them.

The ring’s design, lacking a display, focuses on passive health tracking. Samsung touts it as offering “24/7 health monitoring,” thanks to a generous battery life of up to seven days, mirroring Oura’s offering.
The Galaxy Ring emphasizes sleep tracking, providing a sleep “score” based on metrics like movement, heart rate, and respiratory rate. It also tracks cycles based on skin temperature during sleep. Its small size makes it less obtrusive compared to larger smartwatches.
Samsung’s Galaxy AI integrates various metrics from sleep and activity to deliver “holistic insights and motivational encouragement.” Notably, these features are available without a paid subscription, giving Samsung an edge over Oura’s $6 monthly fee.
The Galaxy Ring will be available from July 24.
