Samsung has introduced a new demand response program, Flex Connect, for its SmartThings smart home platform. This program allows connected appliances to communicate with the grid and automatically reduce energy usage during high demand periods, potentially preventing blackouts. Flex Connect is available in New York and California and integrates with SmartThings Energy, an energy management solution that uses AI Energy Mode to automate responses to demand events.
AI Energy Mode can reduce energy consumption by up to 70 percent with Samsung products. It learns household routines and adjusts appliance energy use to meet targets set in the app. When a demand response signal is received from a utility company, Flex Connect can automatically activate AI Energy Mode, turn off devices, and adjust thermostats to conserve energy.
Participants can save money through time-of-use rates or utility rebates and earn Samsung Rewards points. Users without supported appliances can still receive alerts and manually adjust their devices during demand events.
The program is optional, and users can choose and change enrolled devices at any time. Flex Connect supports various Samsung and third-party devices, including brands like Wemo, TP-Link, Aeotec, Ecobee, Sengled, Resideo (Honeywell Home), and Tesla products.
As part of the Matter smart home standard, Samsung expects more compatible devices to join the platform soon. Details on utility collaboration, expansion to other states, or the program's launch date are not yet provided.
