Ukraine has become a hub for developing drones and autonomous weaponry to sustain its fight against Russia. The country’s tech industry is adapting consumer technology, including modified VR headsets, video game controllers, hobbyist computers like the Raspberry Pi, and consumer drones, for modern warfare. This transformation allows drones, which could follow snowboarders or mountain bikers, to track and follow enemy combatants instead.

Companies like Vyriy and Saker are at the forefront, creating autonomous targeting systems for their drones. Although human operators initially select and lock in targets, the tracking software then takes over. Vyriy uses basic computer vision algorithms, while Saker employs deep learning AI to identify and attack targets. Saker’s AI, initially designed for sorting and classifying fruit, was adapted for warfare and tested with drone pilots on the front lines. The success of these projects is facilitated by the availability of consumer technology that can be weaponized easily.

The drones, loaded with explosives, are guided by a human operator to identify targets, then autonomously track and crash into them. Videos verified by The New York Times show these drones successfully hitting Russian targets. Saker is now mass-producing circuit boards for its software, aiming to produce 9,000 units per month by the end of the summer. This need for automation arises from a shortage of personnel, according to Saker co-founder Rostyslav.

Another significant development is an autonomous gun turret called Wolly, developed by the Ukrainian military. Wolly, which resembles the Pixar robot WALL-E, can lock onto targets from up to 1,000 meters away. Operators use a PlayStation controller and tablet to monitor and select targets, with the turret jumping between preprogrammed positions to cover a wide area. The technology behind Wolly is similar to that used in surveillance camera systems to identify individuals.

However, the rise of autonomous weapons raises ethical concerns. Human rights groups and United Nations officials worry that such innovations might trigger a global arms race, potentially destabilizing the planet. Despite these concerns, Ukraine prioritizes using these technologies to fend off the Russian invasion. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, emphasized the need for "maximum automation" as fundamental to their victory.
