Acura’s Future Electric Vision

Acura has revealed an eye-catching SUV concept that offers a glimpse into the next electric vehicle (EV) the brand plans to launch. Unveiled during the 2024 Monterey Car Week in California, this new Performance EV concept previews a production model set to roll out in late 2025. This upcoming vehicle will be built at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio, which is currently being revamped to focus on EV production.

Dedicated EV Platform and Advanced Technology

The Performance EV concept is built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform developed in-house by Honda. This platform, designed to deliver over 300 miles of range according to EPA estimates, is distinct from the General Motors' Ultium EV platform used in current models like the Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue. The new platform will feature an advanced electric and electronic (E&E) architecture, integrating Honda’s proprietary vehicle operating system and a next-generation user interface with digital services.

Design Language and Influence on Future Acuras

The fastback crossover design of the Performance EV concept is striking, though its bold lines may be toned down for the production model. Despite this, many of the concept’s design elements are expected to influence future Acura vehicles. Dave Marek, Acura’s Chief Creative Officer, stated that these design themes will carry forward into upcoming models, shaping the brand's aesthetic direction.

Production and Battery Sourcing

Production of the new EV will take place at Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant, which is being transformed into the Honda EV Hub, specifically dedicated to electric vehicle manufacturing. The batteries for this model will also be sourced from this site, ensuring streamlined production and supply chain efficiency.

Broader Impact on Honda and Afeela Models

The technology featured in Acura’s Performance EV concept is expected to extend beyond just Acura models. Many of the innovations will likely be integrated into future Honda vehicles and possibly even models from the Afeela brand—a new joint venture between Honda and Sony. The first Honda vehicle to utilize this new EV platform will be part of the 0 Series family of electric vehicles, which was first announced at CES 2024. Sales for the first 0 Series EV, a U.S.-built model possibly inspired by the Saloon concept, are anticipated to begin in 2026.

A New Era for Acura and Honda

As Acura and Honda move forward into an all-electric future, the Performance EV concept represents a significant step in the brand’s evolution. With advanced technology, a new design language, and a dedicated EV platform, this concept car showcases the future direction of Acura’s electric vehicles, promising both innovation and style in the years to come.
