India has become a global hub for Global Capability Centers (GCCs), accounting for nearly half of the world's GCCs. In FY23, the country had over 1,580 GCCs, with expectations to surpass 1,900 by 2025, reaching a market size of $60 billion. The fourth quarter of FY23 alone saw the establishment of 10 new GCCs, with 60% focused on Engineering and Research & Development (E&RD).
Chevron's Strategic Investment in Bengaluru's Innovation Hub
Chevron, one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, is making a significant investment in India by committing $1 billion to establish the Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE) in Bengaluru. This new hub will be a cornerstone of Chevron's global operations, focusing on advancing operational reliability, developing low-carbon energy solutions, and exploring subsurface geology for carbon storage.
Expanding Talent and Expertise in India
Located near Bellandur, the Chevron ENGINE will recruit around 600 specialized professionals by the end of 2025, with plans to expand further in the future. The center will hire talent across various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, chemical, computer science, and electrical, as well as specialists in geology, geophysics, and environmental science. This move marks Chevron's first large-scale engineering and innovation center in India, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in Chevron’s global operations.
Chevron's Commitment to Collaborative Innovation
Akshay Sahni, the incoming country head of Chevron India, emphasized that the $1 billion investment goes beyond financial commitment, representing a deep integration of global expertise with local talent. The ENGINE will foster collaborative partnerships to develop scalable technology solutions, leveraging India's vast pool of skilled professionals alongside Chevron’s global subject matter experts.
Continuation of Third-Party Tech Services Collaboration
Despite the establishment of its own innovation center, Chevron remains committed to its long-standing relationships with third-party technology service providers in India. Sahni noted that these partnerships have been instrumental in designing complex projects and operational facilities, and Chevron plans to continue and even expand these collaborations while also bringing some work in-house.
Chevron's new hub in India will enable more extensive collaboration with local partners than ever before. The company recently partnered with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation through Chevron Brands, a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, entering into a long-term agreement to introduce Chevron’s lubricant products in India. This partnership reflects Chevron's broader strategy of deepening its presence in India and leveraging the country’s technological capabilities.
Chevron’s Legacy and Vision for the Future
Chevron's decision to establish ENGINE in Bengaluru is a significant milestone in its 145-year history, as it looks to address the dual challenge of meeting growing energy demands while transitioning to a lower-carbon energy system. By combining local talent with global expertise, Chevron aims to develop innovative solutions that will drive the future of energy on a global scale.
