Significant Price Drops in EV Batteries Over the Past Decade

The average price of lithium-ion battery packs for light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) has seen a remarkable decline of 90% over the last 15 years, according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In 2023, the DOE estimated that battery pack prices averaged $139/kWh on a usable-energy basis for large-scale production, defined as at least 100,000 units annually. Although this figure is still slightly above the $100/kWh threshold many analysts believe is necessary for EVs to reach cost parity with gasoline-powered cars, it represents a substantial drop from the $1,415/kWh average in 2008 (adjusted for 2023 constant dollars).


Technology and Manufacturing Advances Drive Price Reductions

The steep decline in battery prices can be attributed to advancements in battery technology, chemistry, manufacturing processes, and a significant increase in production volume. Since the launch of the Tesla Roadster in 2008, which marked the beginning of the modern EV era, production volumes have surged, providing automakers with economies of scale that were previously unattainable.


Market Trends: Fluctuations and Future Predictions

The downward trend in EV battery prices has continued over the past few years, though there have been some interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related supply-chain challenges. For example, while prices dropped by 13% in 2019, they saw a temporary increase in 2022 before resuming their decline. In 2023, Bloomberg New Energy Finance reported a 14% decrease in battery prices, highlighting the ongoing reduction despite previous setbacks.

Tesla's Struggles and Broader Market Expectations

Tesla has been at the forefront of promoting new battery technologies, such as the large-format 4680 cells, as a means to make EVs more affordable. However, this initiative has yet to yield the expected cost savings. During the company’s annual shareholder meeting in June 2023, CEO Elon Musk acknowledged that Tesla was still working on reducing the cost of the 4680 cells, admitting that the company's own cells were currently more expensive than those sourced from suppliers.

Despite Tesla's challenges, broader market analysis remains optimistic about continued cost reductions. Earlier this year, Goldman Sachs released a report predicting that battery costs could fall by as much as 40% between 2023 and 2025. This reduction could enable EVs to reach cost parity with internal-combustion vehicles as early as next year in certain markets, according to industry analysts.
