Ford Motor Company has teamed up with TXU Energy, Texas' leading retail electric provider, to introduce an innovative energy plan specifically for Ford electric SUV and truck customers in Texas. This pioneering program, called TXU Free EV Miles, offers Ford EV owners the opportunity to charge their vehicles at home for free during designated hours, significantly enhancing the appeal of electric vehicle ownership in the state.
Flexible Charging Options with Significant Savings
The TXU Free EV Miles program is designed to provide maximum flexibility, allowing Ford EV owners to charge their vehicles for free during off-peak hours, specifically between 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. the next day. This 18-hour window aligns with the times when the demand on the grid is lowest, helping to promote grid stability while saving customers money. Charging can be easily scheduled using the Preferred Charge Times feature in the FordPass app or directly through the in-vehicle touchscreen. If charging is needed outside the free hours, customers will pay a fixed rate, the same as the rest of their home energy usage.
Educating Consumers and Supporting the Grid
Ford's collaboration with TXU Energy is part of a broader strategy to educate Texas consumers about the benefits of driving electric vehicles while incentivizing them to charge during off-peak hours. Bill Crider, Ford's senior director of global charging and energy services, emphasized the dual benefits of the program: "Encouraging our electric vehicle customers to charge at off-peak hours helps save them money while supporting a more sustainable, resilient electrical grid." Crider also highlighted that Ford's electric vehicles, like the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, already have lower operating and maintenance costs compared to gas-powered vehicles, and this program further enhances those savings.
Enrollment Perks and Long-Term Benefits
The program is open to Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Escape Plug-In Hybrid customers, who will receive bill credits for home charging costs during the free hours, regardless of the charging hardware they use. Additional incentives include a $100 welcome bonus from Ford and a $250 bonus from TXU Energy for customers who stay enrolled for a year. These perks, combined with the automatic rebates for at-home charging, make the Free EV Miles program a compelling offer for both current and future Ford and TXU Energy customers.
Supporting Texas EV Adoption and Grid Resiliency
TXU Energy’s vice president of energy transition solutions, Sam Sen, underscored the significance of this partnership: "This collaboration with Ford aligns perfectly with our strategy to educate customers on the benefits of owning an EV, remove barriers to adoption, and increase grid resiliency." With Texas being the third-largest state in electric vehicle sales in 2023, the program is expected to further accelerate the adoption of EVs while enhancing the stability of the state's power grid.
Enrollment for the Free EV Miles program is now open to all interested Ford customers who are current or prospective TXU Energy users.
