Hyundai and Kia are exploring new technologies to improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems in vehicle cabins, a development that could be particularly beneficial for electric vehicles (EVs). 

During a recent technology demonstration in South Korea, the automakers showcased a radiant heating system designed to direct warm air specifically at occupants' legs. This system can warm the lower body within just three minutes, using significantly less energy to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature, which could help extend the range of EVs.


Advanced Heating Element for Rapid Warmth

The radiant heating system features a heating element capable of reaching 230 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure safety, it includes a burn prevention mechanism that automatically reduces the temperature when body contact is detected.

In the demonstration, nine heating panels were installed in a Kia EV9 electric SUV, strategically placed around the base of the steering column, door panels, center console, and glove box area.


Energy-Efficient Heated Glass Technology

Another innovation presented by Hyundai and Kia is a heated glass system powered by a 48-volt electrical system. This system can completely defrost glass surfaces within five minutes, even in temperatures as low as -0.4 degrees Fahrenheit. 

According to Hyundai, this method is up to four times faster than conventional climate control systems and uses around 10% less energy. Additionally, the embedded metal coating that transmits heat can also block solar rays, helping to reduce cabin temperatures on hot days.

Potential Applications for All Vehicles

While these technologies could be applied to any type of vehicle, they are particularly advantageous for EVs, which lack combustion engines to generate heat for cabin warming. For instance, Ford has discovered that heated interior surfaces can improve EV range, and in 2023, automotive supplier ZF introduced a heated seat belt that makes similar claims. 

These features could become standard in future vehicles to enhance comfort and energy efficiency.


Innovative Window-Tinting Technology

In addition to heating systems, Hyundai and Kia also demonstrated a window-tinting technology first introduced in 2023. This technology uses a special film to block external heat from entering the vehicle while allowing internal heat to escape. 

Hyundai tested this film on customer cars in Pakistan, where traditional window tinting is illegal, and reported internal temperature reductions of up to 54.5 degrees Fahrenheit. This window-tinting film represents another step toward creating more energy-efficient and comfortable vehicle interiors.
