The Ogun State Government launched its Electric Mobility (E-Mobility) Programme on Wednesday, which includes the introduction of electric bikes and tricycles. This initiative aims to reduce transportation costs and promote a cleaner environment by cutting down carbon emissions.
Launch Event Highlights
During the launch of the first phase of 2,000 electric motorcycles at the Arcade Ground, Governor's Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun highlighted the significance of the E-Mobility initiative. He emphasized that this initiative is a milestone towards a sustainable and green future for Ogun State. The governor noted, "Our administration is committed to mitigating the impact of subsidy removal and high diesel costs while reducing transportation expenses for our citizens."

Benefits of the Initiative
Governor Abiodun explained that the first phase would see the introduction of 2,000 e-bikes, capable of traveling 75-80 kilometers on a full charge, and vehicles that can cover up to 200 kilometers. This effort is expected to reduce transportation costs by 40 percent. He stated, "We aim to reduce our carbon footprint and bring about a significant change in how we think about transportation in our daily lives. This aligns with our energy transformation program for a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations."
Previous Achievements
The governor also noted that Ogun State has led the country in energy transition, being the first to launch and deploy Condensed Natural Gas (CNG) buses about a year ago. These buses are currently serving routes like Ita-Oshin-Adatan in Abeokuta and Mowe-Ibafo to Lagos, significantly reducing transportation fares for residents.
Future Plans and Investments
Governor Abiodun announced the groundbreaking of a new facility named Giga Facility at the Special Agro Processing Zone in Iperu-Remo. This facility, with a $40 million investment, will serve as an assembly plant for electric bikes, two-wheelers, tricycles, commercial buses, electric cars, and swap stations. The investment will be implemented in three phases, starting with e-Okada bike assembly, followed by tricycles and e-vehicles. This initiative is expected to create over 10,000 direct jobs and 50,000 indirect jobs.

Alhaji Sa'idu Ahmed Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, praised Ogun State for being the first to launch the E-Mobility initiative in Nigeria. He remarked that Ogun State has joined other African countries using over 15,000 e-bikes in their transportation sectors. He highlighted that this program would revolutionize the transportation sector by providing a cost-effective alternative to fuel.
