According to Michael Steiner, Porsche's head of research and development, the company is confident that synthetic fuels can play a major role in the automotive industry, especially in reducing emissions from internal combustion engines (ICE). 

In a recent interview with Autocar, Steiner emphasized the importance of synthetic fuels as a complementary strategy to electrification, particularly for existing cars still on the road.

Steiner mentioned that this plant is intended to be a "role model" as the company scales up the production of synthetic fuels. The Environmental Debate Around Synthetic Fuels

Despite Porsche's optimism, the environmental benefits of synthetic fuels are still a subject of debate. Porsche argues that capturing CO2 from the air during the production process effectively neutralizes the emissions from burning synthetic fuels in engines. 

However, a 2021 study by the environmental group Transport & Environment estimated that synthetic fuels could cause pollution levels similar to regular gasoline. Additionally, synthetic fuels require infrastructure similar to that of fossil fuels for production and distribution, which may make them less efficient compared to charging electric vehicles (EVs).
