AI's Potential in Everyday Products

In the near term, Osmo is focusing on developing safer and more sustainable aroma molecules for everyday products like perfumes, shampoos, insect repellents, and laundry detergents. Currently, a small number of companies dominate the fragrance industry, often using secretive and potentially harmful ingredients. Wiltschko believes that by leveraging AI, Osmo can create better and safer alternatives that are non-toxic and less likely to irritate the skin or eyes. This approach not only improves product safety but also makes the fragrance industry more transparent and sustainable.


The Challenge of Digitizing Scent

The journey to digitize scent has been a complex one. During his time at Google Research, Wiltschko led a team that used machine learning to develop a "principal odor map." This map was created by training AI models on a dataset of 5,000 aroma molecules categorized by their odors, such as floral, fruity, or minty. The challenge lay in the intricate nature of molecules—altering just one bond in a molecule's structure could change its scent from something pleasant, like roses, to something unpleasant, like rotten eggs. However, advancements in AI allowed the model to identify patterns within these molecular structures, enabling it to accurately predict the odors of other molecules.


Building a New Kind of Data for AI

One of the biggest obstacles Wiltschko's team faced was the lack of a comprehensive digital library of scent data, unlike the vast resources available for training AI chatbots. After finding existing fragrance industry datasets inadequate, Wiltschko and his team took matters into their own hands. They spent about a year gathering thousands of molecules and obtaining scent descriptions from master perfumers. This data was then fed into graph neural networks (GNNs), a type of machine learning that analyzes relationships between data points, helping the AI model understand molecular structures and predict their associated scents.


Future Aspirations: Teleporting Scents and Disease Detection

Looking ahead, Wiltschko's vision extends beyond current applications. He aims to develop technology that can "teleport" scents, allowing a scent to be digitized in one location and recreated exactly in another. This capability would serve as the ultimate test of the AI model's understanding of scent. Furthermore, Osmo continues to work toward the long-term goal of using AI-driven scent detection to identify diseases earlier, a breakthrough that could revolutionize healthcare. Although this technology may take years to develop, the progress made by Osmo suggests that the future of AI in scent detection holds immense promise.


The Origins of Osmo and its Mission

Osmo began as a research project during Wiltschko's tenure at Google Research, where he led a team focused on using machine learning to predict how molecules smell based on their structure. In 2022, Wiltschko co-launched Osmo as a separate startup with backing from Lux Capital and Google Ventures. His lifelong obsession with smell, which led him to earn a bachelor's degree in neuroscience and a Ph.D. in olfactory neuroscience, drives Osmo's mission. As CEO, Wiltschko is dedicated to advancing AI technology to improve human health and happiness by digitizing the sense of smell.
