The Unprecedented Shutdown
Rubies, once Nigeria's leading digital bank, abruptly ceased operations on February 2, 2021. The digital financial powerhouse, with 180,000 customers and a daily transaction volume of 1.5 billion Naira, was unexpectedly disconnected from the interbank ecosystem without any prior communication. This forced the bank to refund over 30 billion Naira to its customers, leaving both the bank’s founders and its loyal clientele in shock.
Customer Concerns and Public Reaction
The sudden shutdown sent shockwaves through the public, with concerned customers expressing their worries on both mainstream and social media. Aliu Muibi-Hammed, Rubies' CEO, remarked, “It was so bad that we couldn’t explain what was happening to the general public. We were burning but could not shout for public intervention or legal help. It was that bad.”
Founders' Focus on Customer Refunds
During this period, the founders of Rubies were primarily focused on ensuring that every customer received their refunds. They faced the challenge of not being able to provide clear explanations to the public about the situation. The CEO explained, “Well, we had no option but to wait it out and simply present our case again when the time was right. To God be the glory that it didn’t take too long for us to get justice.”
Rubies' Triumphant Return
Barely three years after the unfortunate incident, Rubies is making a comeback with a refreshed approach. The bank, which had set an industry benchmark for personalized banking services and merchant collections, is now back with an updated platform.
