Rwanda has taken a significant step towards advancing its nuclear energy capabilities by signing an agreement with a US-based company to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors. This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the East African nation's efforts to diversify its energy sources and build a self-sustaining nuclear energy industry.


Agreement Details

The agreement, signed on Wednesday, involves Nano Nuclear Energy Inc., which will provide technical assistance, training, and education to Rwanda. The company will also oversee the construction of an unspecified number of SMRs and microreactors in the country. The Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB) announced that this collaboration will ensure Rwanda's ability to maintain a robust and self-sustaining domestic nuclear energy industry.


Implementation Timeline

Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. CEO, James Walker, stated during a press conference in Rwanda that the construction of these reactors is expected to take place within the "next few years." He emphasized that Rwanda's smaller communities, which may not justify the use of large reactor systems, would greatly benefit from microreactors. These microreactors could serve up to 3,000 people for 20 years without the need for refueling.


Rwanda's Energy Landscape

Rwanda, with a population of about 13 million, currently generates approximately 51% of its electricity from thermal sources, 44% from hydro-power, and around 4% from solar power. The introduction of nuclear energy, particularly through the use of SMRs and microreactors, is seen as a strategic move to enhance the country's energy mix and support its growing electricity needs.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), SMRs generate about one-third of the power produced by traditional reactors. However, their advantage lies in their ability to be mass-produced and easily transported to various locations. This makes them ideal for countries like Rwanda, where smaller communities require efficient and reliable energy solutions.


Previous Collaborations

This latest memorandum of understanding (MOU) follows a deal Rwanda reached last year with Canadian-German start-up Dual Fluid to build a nuclear reactor, which is expected to be operational by 2026. These developments highlight Rwanda's commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure and embracing innovative technologies to meet its energy demands.
