Samsung Solid-State Batteries to Debut in Luxury Electric Vehicles

Samsung's latest solid-state battery technology, promising up to 621 miles of range, is set to power premium electric vehicles (EVs) first. These cutting-edge batteries are expected to dramatically improve vehicle range, reduce charging times, and eliminate the risk of battery fires. According to PC Magazine, mass production could begin as early as 2027, with multiple automakers already testing samples. While Samsung did not specify which companies are involved, it has previously collaborated with Hyundai, Stellantis, and General Motors.


Premium EVs to Receive Samsung's High-Cost Solid-State Batteries

Given their advanced capabilities, Samsung's solid-state batteries will initially be integrated into "super premium" EVs. These luxury vehicles are expected to offer 900 to 1,000 kilometers (559-621 miles) of range along with enhanced safety features. However, the high production costs mean that these batteries will be exclusive to the upper echelon of the EV market, at least initially. Samsung SDI VP Koh Joo-young revealed during SNE Battery Day 2024 in Seoul that feedback from automakers testing the batteries has been overwhelmingly positive.


Smaller, Lighter, and Safer: Why Automakers Are Interested

Automakers are particularly interested in Samsung's solid-state battery packs due to their smaller size, lighter weight, and superior safety compared to current EV batteries. These batteries boast an energy density of about 500 Wh/kg, nearly double that of mainstream EV batteries, which already allow for more than 300 miles on a single charge. With the potential to achieve 600 miles of range in a similarly sized battery, the challenge remains in reducing production costs to make them more widely available.


Future Developments: Faster Charging and Extended Lifespan

Samsung's presentation also highlighted ambitious plans for the future. By 2029, the company aims to produce batteries that can charge in just nine minutes and last for 20 years. This innovation would further enhance the appeal of solid-state batteries, positioning Samsung as a leader in the next generation of EV technology.
