Developed by scientists from Northumbria University in collaboration with partners in Pakistan, this innovation is poised to change the way we think about agricultural waste. 


The Scale of Banana Waste in Pakistan

Banana farming in Pakistan produces a staggering 80 million tons of agricultural waste annually. Instead of letting this waste rot, the new technology transforms it into valuable resources. 

The process begins by converting banana waste into textile fibers, and any remaining material is used to generate renewable energy, effectively maximizing the utility of every part of the banana.


Clean Energy for Rural Pakistan and Addressing Environmental and Economic Challenges

This innovative project is not just an environmental win but also a significant step forward for people in rural Pakistan. Many communities in these areas still rely on polluting fuels for energy. The new technology aims to provide clean, banana-powered electricity, potentially delivering sustainable energy to half of rural Pakistan.

Dr. Jibran Khaliq, one of the project’s leading researchers, highlights the pollution challenges posed by Pakistan's textile industry. By utilizing banana waste, the project reduces harmful emissions and water pollution while producing biofertilizers that improve soil health and boost food production. This "groundbreaking journey," as described by Interesting Engineering, is a major step towards sustainable practices in the textile industry.


Massive Energy Potential from Banana Waste Backed by Significant Funding

The potential impact of this technology is enormous. Scientists estimate that banana waste in Pakistan could generate an astounding 57,488 million cubic meters of syngas, a sustainable fuel that can be used for electricity generation. This means that your everyday banana peel could eventually power homes across the country.

This innovative project, known as SAFER (Sustainable Access to Energy in Rural Pakistan), has received £300,000 (approximately $396,000) from Innovate UK to further develop this waste-to-energy technology over the next year. The initiative is a significant step toward achieving sustainable energy solutions for rural communities.

Dr. Muhammad Saghir, another key figure in the project, expresses his excitement about the potential impact. He emphasizes that this approach not only transforms agricultural by-products into sustainable textiles but also fosters local job creation and contributes to the UK's net-zero agenda.
