A team based in the U.K. has established a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by an electric vehicle (EV) on a single charge. They covered an impressive 569 miles and 3,379 feet in a Ford Mustang Mach-E.


Details of the Record-Breaking Attempt

Sponsored by fleet management company Webfleet, the record attempt took place on July 27. The team used a single-motor Mach-E Premium equipped with the larger Extended Range battery pack and 18-inch EV-specific tires from Bridgestone. The journey lasted just over 24 hours, according to Autocar.


Impressive Efficiency of the Mustang Mach-E

The Mach-E was driven on U.K. public roads, covering 21 miles even when the battery indicated 0% capacity. The electric SUV achieved an average of 6.25 miles per kWh, significantly surpassing the official WLTP rating of 3.8 miles per kWh for this model in the U.K.

Comparing Past and Present Records

Previously, the record was held by Chinese automaker Zeekr, which covered 563.971 miles in Hangzhou, China, in September of last year. Nio also claimed that their ET7 sedan with a 150-kWh battery pack traveled 650 miles in a 14-hour journey between Shanghai and Xiamen, but this was not officially recognized by Guinness.


Insights from the Record-Breaking Drive

According to Webfleet, the route was designed to "emulate real-world driving conditions." However, achieving this record likely required extremely conservative driving. The Mach-E model used is WLTP-rated for a 372-mile range, with an equivalent EPA rating of 320 miles.


Future Implications for EV Technology

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX concept also demonstrated significant potential by covering 746 miles on a charge during a 2022 trip from Germany to the U.K. Although not a production car, the EQXX showcases engineering that could enhance the efficiency of future Mercedes EVs, addressing the weight challenges of current models.

This remarkable achievement not only sets a new benchmark for EVs but also underscores the potential for future advancements in electric vehicle technology and efficiency.
